THE BABY SHOWER
I always knew I never wanted a wedding
but was certain that my first baby shower would be as grand as one. I started planning this shower as soon as I was in the clear with this pregnancy so it’s been a labor of love for the past 5 months. I know "traditionally" you’re not supposed to plan your own shower, but the type A personality in me won’t let someone else take over such an important event so I kept my plans close to my chest because I didn’t want other’s input. My motto was just show up, be impressed, have a good time and talk about all the fun you had! LOL
The mister is African, from Cameroon, and I’m regular black – if that’s a thing – so this party was going to be a fusion of the cultures. Traditionally, Cameroonian baby shower’s start at midnight and go until the break of dawn (literally) and everyone and their mama come to eat, dance and fellowship all day. It was difficult finding a venue besides someone’s house to host such a large party at that time and a house party just wasn’t the vibe so thankfully I found this really cute open concept urban venue that was accommodating and we compromised starting the party at 8pm and ending at 1am.
Once I had the venue locked down, I picked my invites which gave me the enchanted garden feel and that set the theme and feel for party which was grown and classy cocktail. I had to have real furniture like couches and armchairs - because we classy - beautiful lighting with custom floral projections on the floor to set the mood and lots and lots of fresh flowers and moss. I obsessed over every detail for weeks and could barely sleep the night before the party because I was so excited!
The day of the party anything that could go wrong, did. The forecast called for rain and we got torrential showers that lasted the entire day. Like no joke it was the blinding, sideways rain; the can't stop wont stop down pours and flooding. My phone was off the hook with guests canceling but sending their love because the weather was that bad. My joke of the day was, "I'm not going to the party!" and it was my party! The DMV Traffic was horrendous and delayed everything from the opening of the venue to my food deliveries to my helping hands. I stayed too late, 20 minutes before the start of the party, just to put my finishing touches and oversee things and made a grand entrance 35 minutes late to my own party! I was cute though so ha! Thank God for great friends and my family who stayed behind and got everything in place so when I returned it was absolutely magical! I was so impressed because all the ideas in my head really came to life and all the drama leading up to the party was worth it.
I can’t even put into words how much fun we had surrounded by close family and friends who made their way from all corners of the world to be with us and celebrate this new life. Cameroon, Canada, Texas, Ohio, South Carolina, Utah, Pennsylvania, Georgia, DC, Maryland and Virginia! We ate, drank and danced the entire night away and everything was so good from the mac and cheese, chicken and waffles to the suya and jellof rice. My family learned how to dance gwara gwara and we all did the electric slide and wobble. There was so much love and excitement in the room for arrival of baby Aneesa and everyone’s generosity over flowed that it took a caravan of cars to get everything home. We are definitely blessed and all set!
Now that this shower is over, I can rest my mind and my Pinterest boards and focus on getting the house ready for baby’s arrival because the countdown is officially on!
Oh, if I hadn't mentioned it already; it's a girl.
